Maybe a chairlift isn’t such a bad idea

“Okay, do you see that little peak way back there? That is where we are going.”
“Is it far?”
“No, 3500 vertical feet or so.”
“Okay”
This is a sample of a conversation I had recently with some friends who were visiting from out of town. I’m not sure how everyone felt about climbing up this mountain in Grand Teton National Park with the intension of skiing it, but everyone made it without any complaints. Was it worth it?

I think so!
Playing With Fire

Another successful weekend of partying has come and gone… the third annual ski jump party in Goat, WY brought over 100 ski bums together to drink, eat, dance, and most importantly huck themselves over a raging fire. Here we have a Teton Village Sports customer and friend sporting the Volkl Mantras while nailing a triumphant spread eagle. I would say this is a great example of the versatility of these skis, everyone should get themselves a pair.

Here a friend and local snowcat guide shows us his moves, currently wearing The North Face Park Cargo Pant and a Patagonia Lightweight Ski Hat. Stylish and warm! Lucky for all of you these pants are on sale now. You too could look this good.
Aubie Berger

We love it when customers send us pictures. Especially when they are showcasing our products in action. Above you will see Teton Village Sports customer Aubie Berger in action at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Looks like the “Egg Cartoons” are no problem for Aubie and his Volkl AC3’s.
Thanks Aubie, keep up the good work.
No Tracks Make For Happy People

Either someone told Terry O’Connor that he just won the lottery, or he is skiing untracked Wyoming powder. Oh wait, there is a track in the background. Seriously though, the last time I saw a grin like that there where helicopters and bacon involved. There is just something about powder skiing. I think it must be all of the negative ions.
Fresh Powda

AHHHHHHHHH! It’s back. Jackson have received 26″ of snow in the past 72 hours. This is whatwe live for in the Teton’s. Above the General (Jeb Stuart) sinks them into some of the Teton Cold Smoke.

I know how angry you all get when I don’t include a picture of the day. You think this one looks good, you should have seen the descent.
Oh Wait!

POWDA! Looks like it was worth the hike.
New Tongues
I have received a few off air comments about the last post and how it seemed strange that someone who works at a ski shop should not be asking the general populous for advice on AT boots. First of all I disagree. Granted I think I know a lot, but the truth is until you actually test a product out you don’t really know what will happen and if it will work for you.
However, In an attempt to please everyone I have decided to attempt to fix my own problem. As you may recall I have some very soft AT boots. I have decided to attempt to stiffen them up with the stiffer tongue that Scarpa offers. I think this is the right move in these difficult times.
I will add an image when I get them in the next few days. Oh the pain I endure formy loyal readers.

I’m not sure of the direction I want this post to go. I spent Saturday morning in Grand Teton National Park skiing Albright Peak. At 10,492′ it is a nice little trek. Since the snow has been some what elusive the past few weeks we wanted to get out and search for some powder. We definitely found the powder which was one story line that I thought about going with. I had heard a lot of grumbling around town last week that the skiing is “not good”. I can assure everyone that all of the skiing I have done in the last week has been great. Both in bounds and in the backcountry. I think there is a little fall out from last year. Everyone just expects to ski deep lift service powder everyday. I’m not saying you will find waist deep snow where ever you go, but if you are selective you can certainly find soft snow and good skiing both inbounds and out. It is all about aspect I guess.
The other story line I considered was a simple gear review. Actually a review and a question. I have finally come to the conclusion that I need stiffer touring boots. I have a pair of Scarpa Matrix AT boots. I new they were soft when I bought them. In fact that is why I bought them. I like the added flex when I am touring on my split board. However, when I am skiing they just do not offer enough support. I should point out that I am 6′10″ and weight 240 pounds. When I ski the Matrix I can’t tell if I am in walk or ski mode because it just is not stiff enough for someone my size. That being said I have always liked the boot for touring on either skis or the split board. I think it would be a good boot for a normal sized human who doesn’t like stiff boots. My question is does anyone have any feedback on any of the new “stiffer” AT boots? I have skied the BD Factor a little and I would actually like something stiffer. I’d love to hear back from anyone who might have some insight. I’m particularly interested in the new Dynafit boot.
Another story line I thought about was the fact that I love the Clif Shot Blocks. They seem to help keep my energy up and keep me moving. In my head it helps to supplement water breaks, but I don’t know. Give them a try.
Bottomline, I would say that no matter what the story line is we had a great tour in the park this weekend. Hopefully, the forecast for the week is correct and we will see some fresh snow, but regardless, get out and enjoy the winter. You never know how good the snow will be until you go. You just might end up with a smile on your face.

Snowbasin and the new gear
The on hill ski demo, hosted at Snowbasin, UT wasn’t the same as last years 26” of snow, but we managed to soak in the rays and rip pristine corduroy for two days. Checking out all the new skis, our very own Squirrel Murphy could not find a ski long enough until Rossignol presented him with this.

The NEW Rossignol GT 210 “carved magnificent and a great ski for all-mountain conditions”. Can’t wait to ski it myself. The new VOLKL Gotama was a crowd favorite, along with the Blizzard Atlus, Rossignol S7 and 112, and Faction Alius. I’m already thinking about next winter and it’s only February.
