We here at Teton Village Sports love Thanksgiving. In fact we love all holidays, celebrations, parties and soirees. Which is why we are fired up about Turkey Day tomorrow. So much so that it is the only holiday that our retail store is not open for. Thanksgiving for many of us that are not fortunate enough to get home to see the families are spent with our colleagues from the store. Typically, the day involves skeet shooting, skiing or snowboarding if we have snow, perhaps a turkey trot and then we switch things into high gear and deep fry several turkeys and feast on every one’s favorite family dishes. This year we are moving away from the deep fried bird and we are switching to the smoker. I thought I would get every one’s opinion on this move. We love the deep fired bird, but I think it was time for a change. Let us know what you think.

This is probably my favorite time at the retail store (except for late afternoons after a 12+” day when everyone storms the beer fridge). The first couple of weeks of the new ski season are full of excitement and angst. The staff at the retail store swells up with new and old winter staff members who bring with them a renewed excitement for the new gear and upcoming season. The new staff always have bewildered eyes as they learn the new products, employees and lingo. The return of the old staff members is like a home coming as they role into the store from points unknown and just settle back into their jobs like they had never left for the summer. I walked into the store today and the air was so electric it felt like the the last few minutes before the start of a sled dog race. Employees where running around getting everything set up for opening weekend. They were talking about their new skis or new kit or where they have been for the past 7 months. They truly were like excited, tethered dogs just waiting for the start.

Many people believe that the famed “Steelhead Trout” do not actually exist. Probably because they are almost as rare as two horned unicorns. I myself am a doubter of the existence of steelhead. Fortunately, Teton Village Sports Fishing Ambassador Mike Spector does all he can to prove me wrong. Here is Mike with a 27″ sea run rainbow trout A.K.A. Steelhead Trout.

The snow makers have been working hard to get an early season run open on Apres Vous here in Jackson Hole. This may seem like a problem to some. This would not be the first season that started with just one run open. Once the snow starts here in Jackson it usually comes in quick and keeps coming. I for one am not concerned even though I am ready for some powder!

A heli logging crew has been clearing an area in or around Crescent H Ranch in Wilson recently. I wonder if they will showcase this on one of the many reality logging show. It is crazy to see a helicopter with a bunch of logs attached to it flying through the air. I can think of a good use for that chopper when they are not picking up logs with it.

I would like to personally thank everyone for finalizing my decision to purchase the Bogner Silver Sale Jacket. I received it the same day water was found on the moon and absolutely had to go get myself a taste. The jacket allowed my to fit right in with everyone else as well as keeping me very very warm. This was one of the greatest adventures of my life, I look forward to having many more good times in my new jacket.

This weekend, after two days of straight snow, I went for a ski tour on Teton Pass. It was a nice little Sunday and the sun was shining. The hills up there are really filling in nicely! Made a few turns in some snow filled bowls. Saw a big moose and then called it a day.

It is a fact that I do not owe a set of skis that are setup for alpine touring. I enjoy touring so obviously I need a pair of skis to mount some Dynafit binding on. I have narrowed my search to two skis. The Volkl Katana and the Volkl Gotama. I now that both skis would work fine for me. I am 6′10″ so I have to go with the longest option available. 197cm and 194cm respectively. The katana is slightly wider and will ski powder better, but I am thinking the gotama will be a little lighter which is nice on long tours and it will still ski powder pretty well. I already own a Katana that I use as an all-mountain ski here in Jackson so I know it well and I do think it is just as versatile as the gotama. It is a tough decision. I would appreciate your input.
